Protect Plants From Frost

2 Protect Plants From Frosthttp://KLNLandscapeDesign.com
The overall aim of cold weather protection and to protect plants from frost is to insulate plants from the extremes of freeze conditions by trying to maintain a constant temperature.

Insulation

Wrapping plants in Burlap, Carpet, Sheets or even newspaper in some circumstances is effective in protecting the top growth from damage. These materials can also help to moderate fluctuation in soil temperatures. Once temperatures rise above freezing, these covers can be removed.

Mulches

In addition to the wrapping of plants or root systems, a layer of mulch, straw or leaves can act as a "blanket" to aid in maintaining soil temperatures. Mounding soil around the base of such plants as roses and other woody plants is another source of protecting root systems from fluctuating soil temperatures.

Cloches

A cloche is nothing more that a miniature greenhouse application to protect plants from frost. If you have rows of plants or growth that requires protection a roll of CLEAR poly can work in a pinch. Please note that the reason for CLEAR poly is to introduce sunlight into the mix, Black Poly will heat the plants even though it's cold out the temperatures from the Black poly can burn your hard work. Cardboard boxes are another good Cloche alternative.

Wind Protection

Though a tedious and sometimes expensive deterrent from freezing temperatures, a simple wind break in open areas can aid in protecting your investment. In open areas where freezing wind can be a problem a simple system of metal or wood stakes with Poly, old sheets or carpet can be a perfect solution. Wind Chill temperatures can reach below freezing and providing a wind break is a perfect deterrent in protecting your investment and beauty of your Landscape. Kathryn L.
