male cropped Your Questions About Greenhouse Gardening

admin answers:

Yes - in a green house. Yes - you need light. No - on a pot of compost.
Natural light is about 15 hours right now and this is considered starting late for an outside grow.
Germinate the seeds before planting. Use soil or potting soil. Straight compost is way too much nitrogen especially to get a healthy plant started. Increase success by using 3 gallon buckets, starting 10 seeds, transplanting each to their own bucket and pulling the males quickly when the suns natural cycle sends the plants into bud (Maybe the end of August depending on the geography).

Greenhouse Kits, Many To Choose From

The popularity of the greenhouse kit has grown steadily over the past few years as the selection of style and sizes has grown. Now the gardening enthusiast can purchase the kit that best suits their needs. Before deciding on the greenhouse kit to buy there are many factors you must take into consideration.

Greenhouse Kit Details

Whether you want a 6' x 8' or up to 16' 24' greenhouse, you can find the one to fit your needs. Many different designs including Gable Style, Barn Style, Gothic Style, Dome Style, Hoop Style and many more can be purchased

Greenhouse frames mainly are built from aluminum, plastic, galvanized steel redwood or cedar. The most popular choice is the greenhouse with plastic frames as it is the one that provides the least amount of heat loss and is also less expensive than the other choices.

Before the popularity of the greenhouse kit, the siding of the custom-made traditional greenhouse was mainly constructed of a double or triple wall of glass. This allowed more heat to be kept trapped within the greenhouse. The greenhouse moved away from the traditional and now uses mainly unbreakable Fiberglas, polycarbonate or polyethylene plastics. This still provides excellent insulation.

A great advantage of the new greenhouse kit is how easy they are to assemble. The parts come pre-cut and pre-drilled or in some cases the frames will come with snap-together technology. The cost efficient greenhouse kit will usually come with a frame constructed of aluminum or galvanized steel with a built in door and a plastic cover.

A roll-up or side-flap zipper door will be the popular choice in the greenhouse design. The inside height of the greenhouse is around 8 feet providing plenty of headroom for the gardener. Some kits will come with a system to anchor the greenhouse, or possibly a floor or benches.

]]>

Most greenhouse kits do not come with foundations, though they may provide information on how to lay one down. It is important to create a level floor surface to provide a good drainage system as well as keep the structure from damage due to the adverse weather conditions. Foundations can be constructed out of materials such as pressure-treated wood, patio stones or poured concrete. If you do not want to fabricate your own from scratch, floor-framing kits can be purchased from most gardening outlets that sell the kits.

There are many greenhouse kits available for purchase with a few listed below.

Sunshine

If your preference in greenhouse framing is Redwood you may want to consider Sunshine. They usually come with 10 foot tall frames giving far more space than an 8 foot tall greenhouse kit. Polycarbonate insulation is built directly into the frame allowing for easy construction. Price ranges from ,000 - ,000.

Cross Country

A higher end greenhouse kit constructed with an aluminum frame providing a strong structure for your greenhouse. Included within the kits is an automatic ventilating system, screened windows and doors as well as many different options. The quality is very good leading to the higher priced units. The price can range from ,500 to ,000.

Little Greenhouse

Considered a very good greenhouse kit for beginners. The kit includes a polyethylene covering that is 4 millimeters thick that helps protect against ultra-violet rays. Included with the kit is a PVC frame, an exhaust fan and a bench setup.

Juliana

One of the more popular kits because of its aluminum rust-free frames enclosed with a double wall poly-carbonate enclosure. The greenhouse kit comes in many different models and can be purchased at an extremely affordable price starting as low as .

Portable

As the name states, this greenhouse kit is portable allowing you to assemble or disassemble for seasonal gardening. The Portable greenhouse is also very affordable. They are constructed with a steel structure and a durable plastic film covering. Built-in doors, screened ventilation windows and storage bags are also included. They are priced around the 0 mark.

Hobby Gardener

Panels known as "snapglas" are the staple of this type of greenhouse kit. Snapglas is as sturdy as polycarbonate and as clear as glass. They come with a barn style roof giving more room for the plant growing. Included in the kit are ventilated walls, hinged roofs and hinged doors. The price comes in around ,000 to ,000.

The pleasure of all year gardening has become a lot easier with the increase kits that are available to you. If you decide to build your own, you may want to check out Build Your Own Greenhouse

Greenhouse Plans for Lean to Greenhouses

Lean-to Greenhouses Building & Construction Information

Do you want to build a greenhouse, but do not have enough room for a stand-alone one out in the middle of the yard?

Then the lean-to greenhouses might be what you are looking for.

There is some information you need when you are planning this type of greenhouse.
Read on to learn some facts, which will help you decide whether a lean-to model will do what you want it to.

Size

You must consider that with this type of structure you will not have the same space as with a freestanding one.

However, when you want a small greenhouse and do not have a lot of yard space this will fit your needs just fine.

Remember, this is about half the size of a full one and sometimes not even that.

Location

Do you have some space on an outside wall that has a door in it also?

This is a perfect spot for a lean-to greenhouse.
Also though, make sure the spot gets enough sunlight during the day to make it worthwhile.
Without enough light, your plants will not thrive.

Advantages

The main advantage to the lean-to greenhouse models is that they will be near electrical connections and a water source.

You will not have to make special provisions for these things. Just make a connection for the lights, heaters (if needed) and water into the main electrical or water pipes of the house.

Another benefit to this type of structure is it takes up less space. Even if you have a good-sized yard, you might not want to take the space up with a full-sized greenhouse. If you are just dabbling with a few plants, why have more space then you really need.
Disadvantages

It is harder to have the right ventilation in the lean to greenhouse. The walls are needed for support so not as much can be done compared to a full-size one.

Temperature control could become an issue that will take extra attention to monitor it.

Since it is not as large, it may not get as much sun. But this is part of what you need to analyze when selecting a location.

The biggest disadvantage though, is the limited space.

It will be hard for you to expand upon your gardening beyond what you start with.
You might like it so much that you want to add more plants along the way.

Miscellaneous

After you have constructed your lean-to greenhouse then you have to accessorize it.

You will have to remember to measure your space for the tables you need to put your plants on.
Also make sure everything will fit comfortably through the door.
Now you will be ready for the plants, pots and the supplies to go in.

Having a place to grow your plants in a controlled environment will help cut down on insects and diseases.

You will see that your plants with thrive easier and produce more of a harvest of blooms, vegetables or herbs. So plan and build your lean-to greenhouse today.

While the actual dimensions and shape of your greenhouse is restricted only by your imagination, the space you have to use, and how much cash you have to invest, you should take some time considering what you need your green house to do for you before you choose your greenhouse plans.

There are various basic types of garden greenhouses, and each has its pluses and minuses. Selecting the greenhouse plans which work best for you depends on your needs and your personal preferences. The following are some of the most popular greenhouse plans available:

An Attached greenhouse. This sort of greenhouse shares a wall with your home. They are typically built off the back of a residence, but could possibly be built off the side or perhaps the front if you prefer. The advantage to these sorts of greenhouse plans are they are less pricey (because they share a wall with the house) and they are easy to access, even in poor weather.

]]>

A-Frame Greenhouses. An A-frame demands less material than equally sized greenhouses given it combines the walls and the ceiling/roof to make a single triangular structure. The A-frame garden greenhouse is typically cheaper to build.

Rigid Frame Greenhouses. When you've got a rigid frame greenhouse, you have walls and rafters but you will not likely have trusses or other roof support. It requires an effective foundation. Besides the fact that the interior is open, greenhouse plans featuring this style and design enable very good air circulation.

Post and Rafter Greenhouses. This kind of greenhouse is simliar to the rigid frame design but have rafters for extra support. This design is amongst the sturdiest and shares the area and circulation benefits of the rigid frame. Nonetheless, this kind is very top-heavy and thus the frame has to be footed. This can cause it to be more expensive.

Quonset Greenhouses. Quonset style greenhouse plans come with a semicircular frame constructed from galvanized pipe or conduit. The structure is efficient and functional. Smaller plants may be put in this kind of greenhouse, regardless of the fact there is little head room.

Gothic Greenhouses. These varieties of greenhouses are variations of the Quonset greenhouse plans. They are Gothic style greenhouses, are more elongated and permit for a bit more head room.

The greenhouse plans you finally choose depends largely on personal preference. Any greenhouse design and style will help you get an early start on your flowers and fresh vegetables, so select the design which best appeals to you and matches your needs.
